The Keg Steakhouse and Bar- Won’t be going back

29 01 2011

The Keg Steakhouse and Bar
500 Fort St.
250-386-7789

I went to the Keg on Fort Street last week with SP for dinner. It was a night during the week and it was surprisingly busy. Even more surprising was the lack of service. We waited at the front of the restaurant for close to five minutes without a smile or even a hello from all the servers whizzing by. The hostess, a petite girl, walked sluggishly out of the washroom and took us to the bar seating, overall she had a lacklustre attitude, probably not the best choice for first impressions in a restaurant where most people are prepared to spend good money. Not to mention, it’s kind of gross to see a person who is touching your menu after they exit a washroom, is there no employee washroom to use? It seems common sense that it would be more professional. The restaurant was busy, fair enough, but the service was slow, the food took over 45 minutes. The guy who dropped it off apologized and said , ” sorry your food took so long”. He didn’t offer anything else other than that. It shouldn’t take that long to cook a steak medium rare. Unacceptable. You have to buy veggies and sides for extra, unless you want to eat meat with only a potato. The prices are high, and the quality is mediocre. They’ll continue to be busy because of their “chain” status, but that’s no excuse to be sloppy with service and attitude. The experience left nothing to be desired, and I won’t be spending money there again.

Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse- Sweet Groupon!

26 01 2011

This is one of the most exciting Groupon’s I have seen yet. It’s a great deal, for $25 you get to taste all the flavours of cider they make, a free bottle of cider, hot mulled cider or hot Rumrunner, and finished off with a cheese/charcuterie plate. I have heard great reviews of this place, and the location you get to enjoy it in has beautiful ocean views.

Addicted to this show…

17 01 2011

I just discovered this show that Gordon Ramsay did in the UK. He goes around the UK looking for top restaurants in certain categories. The winners from each category go forward to the semi-final round. If you don’t have a TV, or have a couple of extra hours start watching this show. Really entertaining to watch!

It’s called Gordon Ramsay’s Best Restaurant.

You can watch it on Youtube, this link will start you off

Cleansing Hiatus…

16 01 2011

Sadly, I am on a cleanse right now for a month. This means I can’t go out and try exciting and crazy meals in Victoria’s restaurants…unless someone can suggest a place where I can have a meal that is flexible with yeast, flour, sugar and dairy limitations. If I do find a place which can accomodate my strict eating habits right now, it will be reviewed.

Stay tuned, and e-mail me if you have any ideas!

Cheers

West Coast Waffles

16 01 2011

West Coast Waffles
1235 Broad St.

I was really excited to go to West Coast Waffles on Broad St. A few friends were giving it some buzz, and a lazy New Years day felt like the perfect time to try it out. The staff here are all very young, as was the clientele, but then some family’s came in. I don’t know how new this place is, I have walked by it a few times, but I found it hard to think of a time where a waffle would satiate me.

The menu is pretty straightforward, you choose a batter and a flavour/topping. We had coffee( kudos for using Saltspring Island Organic), and waited for our waffles to be made. I had the spelt batter and the lovely JB had the original batter. I had the Wake n’ Bacon, which had scallions, cheese, and bacon in it, accompanied with a green salad, and salsa/sour cream for the waffle. JB had the peach and blackberry waffle, with some blackberry syrup.

This place is worth supporting because the owners are straight out of university, and I think they have done a decent job thus far. The interior colours are kind of shocking, and the furnishings are random, but all that can evolve.

Wafflehouses are a very limiting-niche, but it seems to be quite popular! Good luck guys!
