Cafe Medina-Mocha mingling and Tabbouleh Tingling

Cafe Medina was suggested to me by a friend who has some connections with the chef working there. She spoke very highly of all that is Cafe Medina. I got off the skytrain at Stadium/Chinatown, and Cafe Medina was conveniently only steps away[with the aid of my iPhone maps directions]. I had a checklist of things to try before I even stepped inside. Mocha, waffle, and something North-African/Middle-Eastern influenced. It’s a skinny lay-out, with tables hugging one side of the room. I was lucky enough to score a table. I had a proper mocha, and I savoured every sip. For breakfast I went all out. I had the Libanais( or Lebanese-style) breakfast, which consisted of a soft-boiled egg, tabbouleh, bhaba ghanouj, tomato and cucumber salad and some pita chips.

The tabbouleh hit me with a surprising amount of lemon, but I found it very refreshing with the parsley. The bhabaghanouj was very creamy, and subtle. The tomato and cuke salad was cleansing and fresh. The egg was delicate, but I found the pita chips to be too oily for my liking. Just plain pita bread or a flatbread would have been nice, without all the oil. It was a treat to have something more exotic and savoury for breakfast.

The Belgian waffle was nice, I had it with milk chocolate sauce and a berry mix[thank you to the lady server who chose these for me].The waffle wasn’t spectacular[in comparison to Wannawafel in Victoria], but it was crispy on the  outside and chewy in the middle. For just over 20 dollars with a tip, I ate like a king as far as I was concerned. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I’m jealous Vancouver, bring some of your amazing restaurants to Victoria.

Cheers

Smuggler’s Cove- So-so

27 06 2011

Smuggler’s Cove Neighbourhood Pub
2581 Penrhyn St.

I rarely go to Cadboro Bay area, but a few weeks ago the sun was shining and JH and I decided on a beach day. After a nice afternoon of eating pistachios and cherries, we were in need of something more substantial. The location of Smuggler’s Cove is ideal for beach-goers or UVic students seeking an off-campus hangout. The server we had was a touch rough around the edges, but nice enough. She got us some drinks, and we put in our order. I always ask a server to recommend something for me to eat. I find it amusing when I ask for a suggestion and then I see their eyes busily reading the menu as I read it, their mouths simultaneously saying exactly what we’re both reading together. Not much of a suggestion then is it? I went for the cajun veggie burger, which wasn’t particularly cheap, something like 12 or 13 dollars. When I hear Cajun, some level of heat and spices come into mind. The only thing Cajun about the Cajun veggie burger was the name. For a beer and a burger, plus tip, over 20 dollars for the bill, schmeh. I don’t think I’ll plan a special trip to go here again. I’ve eaten here a few times before in the past, and it was about the same, average. I like the building, dark and spacious, and they have a patio for the summer. I do believe the food needs an upgrade into the 21st century, the menu is outdated.

Angry comments- thoughts?

27 06 2011

Over the course of this blog, I’ve had my fair share of hate-mail, and controversy. I received this comment today from an anonymous agro-reader.

“You are a douche. If you think that you bring value or something positive to the dining scene in Victoria you are sadly mistaken. You are a poser and an imposter and you don’t know what you are talking about. You think you can be a vegetarian and critique professional chefs food? Go away you add nothing of value to the industry.”

I would have liked to respond to this person, but they didn’t identify themselves or leave an e-mail address. I welcome any angry feedback from restaurant owners, disgruntled readers and people who generally don’t agree with my point of view. But I do challenge people with the ammunition to do their research and give me something constructive to work with.

This commentator obviously hasn’t read most of my reviews, which weren’t vegetarian. I have only been vegetarian for a few months. To me, food is food, whether it is vegetarian/vegan/or with meat. At the end of the day, if it doesn’t taste good then I shall say so. I’m assuming the person who sent me this somewhat aggressive response is an employee or owner of a restaurant of which I didn’t give a positive review. I feel that people respond negatively when there is some truth ringing in their ears. If I said that something sucked, maybe you’re afraid of admitting that, oh hey, maybe they do need more vegetarian options, or hey, maybe our food quality is a joke. Just a thought..

Jackalope Bistro- Fast, easy and cheap, in the best way possible

26 06 2011

Jackalope Bistro
760 Yates St.
778-430-5673

I read about Jackalope Bistro on the blog Your Restaurant Sucks [your-restaurant-sucks.blogspot.com], and it sounded pretty exciting. Jackalope is located in that little alleyway between Johnson and Yates, by the movie theatre. It was been countless restaurants previously, including a short-order pasta place(Fasta Pasta), and I think it was a pizza parlour before that. I have walked by many times, but I never realized how small that space is. I went to eat lunch a bit late, just past 2 o’clock so no one else was inside eating. The owner/chef was inviting, and the interior was bright and relatively clean. I checked out Jackalope’s menu online(www.jackalope.ca)   before my visit because I heard they had multiple options for vegetarians. I went for the black bean veggie burger with coleslaw(5.95 for the burger, extra 1.00 for the slaw).

The food came quickly, and he thoughtfully dropped off some water. The slaw was standard but it had some green apples in it, served over a bed of tiny shredded lettuce. The flavour was crisp. The burger tasted like a black bean and rice burger I made a few weeks ago. It had a nice crispy crust on it, and packed full of nice spices and textures. The avocado was a nice touch, and the aioli had a nice citrus punch to it. For $6.95 it’s a no brainer. Especially in this downtown core area, Jackalope is a nice option rather than pizza or a 15 dollar burger at Pink Bicycle. The food is no frills, but that’s what is charming about it. I appreciate the homey-ness of it all, and it was all delivered with a smile. I wish the owner the best of luck, he seems to be on the right track for success. They have extra seating outside the bistro too, and they serve brunch burgers as well.

Sticky Wicket- Slack service, decent food

26 06 2011

The Sticky Wicket
919 Douglas St.
250-383-7137

I’ve been to the Wicket a few times for food. The last two times were better than average, but my most recent visit was just average. We didn’t get service for close to ten minutes of sitting down. I can understand when a restaurant/pub is busy, but 10 minutes is a little bit on the lazy/slow side. MH, JH, and I ordered a round of drinks and some small food. I had some yam fries, and some dessert later on.MH had some spring rolls and a margherita pizza. The prices weren’t super high, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the dessert, and the spring rolls tasted like canned tuna apparently. I wasn’t impressed with the vegetarian options, typical fried offerings or unimaginative pizza or salad. Coupled with the service, I don’t think I will be going back anytime soon.

Penny Farthing Pub- Pathetic for Vegetarians

19 06 2011

Penny Farthing Pub
2228 Oak Bay Ave
250-370-9008

I have tried giving the Penny Farthing a few chances. But all three times have been flops. Once I didn’t even get to eat, once the food sucked, and make that twice, the food sucked on my last experience too. The worst part is that, despite their daily specials, the food is exorbitantly overpriced keeping in theme with most of the joke pubs [Bard and Banker, Irish Times for example]. I found it extremely hard to find something veggie-friendly on the menu. Most of it was seafood or meat. For a whopping 12 or more dollars, we had the mediterranean veggie dip. The predominant flavour was cheese, but to my shock, I could taste seafood. I don’t know if there was some type of cross contamination, but it tasted fishy, definitely put me off. The dip was marketed as a veggie dip, yet I couldn’t recognize any vegetables. With a pint of expensive beer, this last experience will be just that, my last. Epic Fail.

Ledge Lounge- Laidback atmosphere and decent food

19 06 2011

Ledge Lounge
1140 Government St.
250-384-6835

The Ledge Lounge lies within the Bedford Regency Hotel, right next to Cafe Artigiano on Government Street. The room itself is quite dark, fitting for a lounge. There is a bar when you first walk in, a pool table, and many inviting tables to sit at. I was surprised when my friends informed me this lounge had a full kitchen, I was compelled to taste their offerings. The Ledge is an LGBT-friendly establishment, but it seemed to be a mixed crowd for a lounge.

Our server was a young man, quite informative and friendly. He suggested I try the veggie burger, which came with a salad and the soup. As a newbie- Vegetarian I asked if the soup had chicken stock, and I was pleased that it was all veggie-based, including no shrimp, oyster or fish sauce in the curry paste. My friends and I enjoyed our drinks, a decent selection of local beers on tap.  The burger was good. I couldn’t make out everything that was in it, but I did find some chickpeas. The portions were generous, and the price was good for the value. I wasn’t super keen about the soup, it was too thick and fatty. There was a lot of flavour, but the consistency was too thick. The salad was good.

Overall, I would suggest going to the Ledge if you want something to nibble on while having a couple of beers/ cocktails. Interesting downtown location, but friendly staff and decent specials( the special that night was lemongrass Saltspring Island Mussels which my friend DL ordered, and enjoyed).

Cheers
