Fatburger

Fatburger

I was not familiar with the Fatburger chain, so I checked out their website. It looked interesting, a step-up from most chain fast-food. Unfortunately I didn’t feel that way when I left.

The ordering process was confusing due to a lack of useful signage. For a simple burger, fries and drink , it came to over 13 dollars. There also seemed to be more staff working than the restaurant needed. The busser was floating around the small eating area and it was painful to watch, over-interacting with customers out of sheer boredom. The food took a while to get to me, enough time for my expectations to be high.  The meat had a strange seasoning on it, leaving me with a strange aftertaste in my mouth. Nothing stood out, pretty standard food that is more expensive and takes longer to make. Not exactly successful selling features. I won’t be going back.

Las Vegas

14 02 2012

This year, my family chose to do something a bit different for the Winter holidays. Instead of gathering around a tree and opening presents Christmas morning, we went to indulge in none other than Sin City herself, Las Vegas.

We only ate two meals a day, I always find that heat makes me less hungry. We ate at our hotel ( The Mirage) for a brunch buffet named ” Cravings”. There were many different stations with themes such as Latin, Italian and Japanese. The food was O.K., the servers brought around orange juice and coffee. I left feeling a bit ill from the amount of food I consumed. The scale of the buffet is impressive, but I don’t think the quality was outstanding.

Also within our hotel, BLT Burger, branded by Laurent Tourondel, made a great lunch one of our first days on our holiday. I have never eaten a burger in Canada that is medium, most likely because of the fear of food-poisoning, or more specifically, restaurants not using good cuts of meat to grind for burgers. I had the wagyu burger (I think it was close to 20 dollars). You have to buy all the sides separately, so for lunch it can get a bit pricy. But the more classic burgers were around 11-13 dollars. The meat was juicy and succulent, I enjoyed having a pink burger. There is such a stigma against pink beef in Canada, so I have learned that if you start with a piece of meat that you could serve medium, then it will be safe for you to eat it in a burger!

I took my family out for a nice dinner at Wolfgang Puck’s baby, Spago, located within Caesars Palace. The space is beautiful and modern. The service initially was interesting, as the server was being “shadowed”. I felt like the server was talking a bit too much, but perhaps that is what expected of him at this establishment. The bread service was delicious with foccacia, lavash, sourdough and some type of nut bread, fresh butter and rosemary olive oil. The amuse bouche was a mushroom soup, and it was served piping hot. Nice and salty and bags of mushroom flavour.

My father ordered the Diver Scallops with corn and crab succotash. I had the duck breast with cabbage puree onions and huckleberries. My sister had the roasted chicken with wild mushrooms and potatoes. My brother had the short ribs with horseradish, ricotta gnocchi and shallots. We were all pleased with the food, and especially with the portion size. The plates were all about 30 dollars each. The food was very Classic American, with a couple of new additions. I enjoyed the meal, but I think next time I visit Las Vegas, I might try something more “out of the box”.

As for the rest of my Vegas trip, I enjoyed playing poker tournaments, the odd slot machine, and a great quality experience with my family.

Ric’s Grill- My first steak in almost a year..

4 02 2012

Ric’s Grill
910 Government St.
250-381-7427

Ric’s Grill is hot real estate on Government St, stumbling distance to the Empress and the rest of downtown. A friend of mine was visiting from Vancouver and he suggested we go to Ric’s because he had some gift cards to use up. I had eaten meat a couple days beforehand (on Christmas Day), so I wasn’t opposed to going to a steak house. The restaurant is massive inside, but it wasn’t too busy, we went around 7:30. Our server didn’t exactly match the steakhouse vibe. She was socially awkward and didn’t seem to have much menu knowledge, two things that aren’t exactly qualities one looks for in a server. Regardless, I wasn’t there to nitpick on every detail, okay, maybe just a bit. What can I say? I’ve been involved in the food industry for close to 10 years now, so it’s second nature to point out things that could be improved upon.

I was pleased to see that there was a somewhat ethical beef choice for steaks on the menu. For seafood, the majority of the offerings are Oceanwise, which I commend Ric’s for supporting. I ordered the Spring Creek Ranch ” Natural” NY steak medium, roast potatoes and veggies. All of us ordered steaks, and we waited patiently for our food amidst enjoyable and much-needed catching up.

The portion size was generous, but for over 30 dollars, it’s to be expected. The meat was not how I requested, it was more on the rare/med-rare side when I asked for medium. My friend ordered his medium rare so perhaps they switched up the plates. It would be easy to do, because all three plates had the same vegetables. Those said vegetables were delicious. I’ve never eaten squash with the skin on before, I thought it was a mistake in preparation but my friend says he eats squash like that all the time. Learn something new every day eh? The maitre’d butter on top of the steak was packed with flavour, a compound butter of sorts. A little extra fat never hurts in the flavour department ;)

Even though the steak wasn’t prepared how I requested, I still enjoyed it very much. It was juicy, flavourful and who knows, maybe I’ll start ordering my steaks medium rare from now on. I wasn’t paying for the meal, so I was very happy to order a steak for over 30 dollars. But I definitely couldn’t afford that on a regular basis. I would go back for the food, but the service was kind of a miss. The ambiance was a bit dark and the room felt sparse. But then again, there goes my nit-picking again.

Cheers

Med Grill- Royal Oak

1 02 2012

Med Grill
4512 West Saanich Rd.
250-727-3444

Ahh.. the end of year Christmas work lunch. This year, eight of us went to the Med Grill. I ate at the Med Grill on Fort a couple of times before Posh took over( and there will soon be a natural health clinic taking over that space very shortly). The food is very similar to offerings in better-than-average chain food like Moxies or Glo ( same owners). The interior of the Royal Oak location of Med Grill is a bit gaudy, but I appreciate the large and open layout.

I had made a reservation weeks prior to our lunch.  Upon our arrival, we were sat promptly at a long table. This was in December, so there were quite a few business/holiday lunching groups doing the same thing. Our server took quite a while to greet us, I don’t know where she was for the first 5 minutes. She brought us drinks, and soon enough, took our orders. They had a special three course meal, but I wasn’t feeling up for over-eating at lunch.

I ordered a red curry pasta, without meat, as I was still a vegetarian. There weren’t many other options for vegetarians. I’ll admit I was skeptical of a Thai/Italian fusion, but it wasn’t so bad. There were a lot of onions and peppers and some apples. Apparently that constitutes a vegetarian entree? The red curry sauce was thick and almost buttery. It had a lot of flavour but it was feeling heavy by the end of the meal. My co-worker in front of me, had the crab cakes. She didn’t rave about them, and the smell wasn’t appetizing. Seafood should have a clean and crisp ocean smell, not fishy. I just looked at the menu online, and some of the other menu items sound quite appetizing. The food was edible, the service was mediocre, and the ambiance fell a bit flat. There wasn’t a buzz in the air, or perhaps that just comes down to the location.

Whitespot- Fort St.- Good Veggie burger

26 07 2011

Whitespot- Fort Street
1871 Fort Street
250-595-4442

This family restaurant is just around the way from me, so it’s a convenient place for a quick bite. They have decent breakfast, but recently I had their veggie burger. I complain a lot about every restaurant only having a veggie burger for vegetarians, with varying degrees of success. There were a few different dishes that were veggie-friendly but the burger sounded good. It was on a multi-grain bun with a basil aioli, grilled veggies and mushrooms and provolone cheese. It was stacked, so I underestimated how filling it would be. The yam fries here are good too, but I needed to basically roll myself out. I’ve had other food here and it’s pretty consistent. The service is quick and the staff seem to work well together. The food is somewhat over-priced I feel, but maybe prices are going up everywhere?

Dine Around Victoria- Glo Europub & Grill

9 03 2011

Glo Europub and Grill
104-2940 Jutland Rd.
250-385-5643

My wishlist for Dine Around this year was long, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it to many restaurants. My third Dine Around experience was at Glo Europub, down in the Selkirk complex ( go down the Gorge, turn left at Jutland, and Glo is down by the water). I have been to Glo a long time ago for a late-night dessert and some drinks, but this was my first time having a dinner there. Glo has a reputation swirling around its patio, arguably one of the best in Victoria for a summer afternoon/evening.

I ordered the hazelnut and goat cheese salad to start, the steak, and banana cake for dessert($20 for all three courses on Dine Around). The salad was simple but nice. The steak wasn’t the greatest cut of meat, and was a bit undercooked( it came rare-medium-rare and I ordered it medium), the veggies were good, and the blue cheese croquette was a nice consistency. It was crunchy on the outside, and creamy on the inside. It could have been seasoned a bit more, salt and pepper, as I found it a bit on the bland side. I enjoyed the banana cake, warm gooey and delicious. JP had the caesar salad, the duck with spaetzle and cabbage, and the chocolate fondant cake($30 for the three). He enjoyed them all. The spaetzle had some type of sauce on them, I tasted something like sour cream in it. Interesting combination of flavours. The chocolate cake was moist, but a true chocolate fondant will be a bit runny/souffle-like in the centre. The food was decent, but I would come back more for ambience. They had some live music on Saturday night which was nice, and there is a nice buzz in the air.

Cheers

Qoola Frozen Yoghurt- Take a trip to the Qoola

19 02 2011

Qoola Frozen Yoghurt
Uptown Shopping Centre

I was really looking forward to having some frozen yoghurt at Qoola, and I left very satisfied. The whole experience is self-serve, starting with pouring your own yoghurt. There were quite a few flavours, pomegranate, chocolate, vanilla to name a few. I had a mixture of dulce de leche and country vanilla. JB had the chocolate. The next stage is the toppings bar, which has everything under the sun. I put on some oreos, crispy crunch bits, gummy bears, ginger snaps, and strawberries. At the end of the line you will find the till, and you put your creations on the scale. For two big servings of yoghurt with toppings, the bill came to around 11 dollars. I had a Groupon to use, and the staff were very quick and friendly. If I ever find myself at Uptown Centre again, I’ll definitely be picking up some frozen yoghurt, so tasty. It’s like the Marble Slab Creamery, without all the calories!

The Keg Steakhouse and Bar- Won’t be going back

29 01 2011

The Keg Steakhouse and Bar
500 Fort St.
250-386-7789

I went to the Keg on Fort Street last week with SP for dinner. It was a night during the week and it was surprisingly busy. Even more surprising was the lack of service. We waited at the front of the restaurant for close to five minutes without a smile or even a hello from all the servers whizzing by. The hostess, a petite girl, walked sluggishly out of the washroom and took us to the bar seating, overall she had a lacklustre attitude, probably not the best choice for first impressions in a restaurant where most people are prepared to spend good money. Not to mention, it’s kind of gross to see a person who is touching your menu after they exit a washroom, is there no employee washroom to use? It seems common sense that it would be more professional. The restaurant was busy, fair enough, but the service was slow, the food took over 45 minutes. The guy who dropped it off apologized and said , ” sorry your food took so long”. He didn’t offer anything else other than that. It shouldn’t take that long to cook a steak medium rare. Unacceptable. You have to buy veggies and sides for extra, unless you want to eat meat with only a potato. The prices are high, and the quality is mediocre. They’ll continue to be busy because of their “chain” status, but that’s no excuse to be sloppy with service and attitude. The experience left nothing to be desired, and I won’t be spending money there again.

Montana’s Cookhouse- Is chain food all the same? Yes

31 12 2010

Montana’s Cookhouse
315 Burnside Rd. W
250-978-9333

I’ve come to the conclusion that there are no good places to eat in the Tillicum/ West Burnside area of Victoria. You have your choice of mall food, buffet food, or American chain restaurants. Montana and it’s conjoined twin disjointed at birth, Kelsey’s, dominate the Tillicum parking lot. I’ve been three times for lunch in the last few months, and I’m putting my foot down. I think it’s robbery for restaurants in Victoria to charge money for what is almost on the same level as garbage. Processed foods, poor quality meats and high fat artery clogging “food”.

Montana’s is as bad as it gets. It offers a 15 minute express menu, so this loosely translates to sandwiches and fries, if it’s over 15 minutes then you get it for free. Montana’s is a restaurant reminiscent of Shenanigan’s( if you’ve ever watched the movie Waiting with Ryan Reynolds, you know exactly what I’m talking about). Where people can get all-you-can-eat ribs, and complain about one thing and get their whole meal for free.  The drinks are served in plastic glasses I swear could hold almost a litre of liquid, and they charge you three dollars for it, but don’t worry, you can get “free” refills. My friend had chicken here, with fries and coleslaw. He said it was O.K. I had a quesadilla one time which was so greasy, I had to break out the napkins and wipe it up. I had a half turkey clubhouse with caesar salad and a pot-roast soup another time, which was decent, but when I’m paying over 16 dollars for lunch, it makes me sad that my money doesn’t equal the same quality in any given establishment. Sixteen dollars at Montana’s feels a lot different than sixteen dollars, let’s say at a place like Relish. The only commonality is that they both serve lunch. Montana’s is at the pinnacle of processed and cheap product, whereas Relish is all homemade and locally sourced. How can my money be so abused. Why offer 100 items on a menu, when you can offer 10 items that you can execute consistently and provide better quality ingredients. Riddle me this ,Victorian restaurants.

Thanks for letting me rant e-space.

Milestones- Inner Harbour Heartbreak

31 12 2010

Milestones Inner Harbour
812 Wharf Street
250-381-2244

I have been to the Milestones Inner Harbour location over 5 times now, but this last visit may very well be just that, my last.  I’ve been holding off putting up this review as I was hoping my friend may guest review( and he still might), as he was most affected by the experience. I have had some good meals at Milestones, but the last two times have been disheartening. I had the chowder which was lukewarm at best, which was unfortunate because the flavours are really tasty, but I couldn’t get past the temperature and the stale tortilla chips. But this last visit takes the cake, the best way to sum up Milestones is: expert industry prices with sloppy service and novice preparation, doesn’t quite match up.

We had made reservations( as it was my friend’s Birthday), and it was a comfortable table of 5. Milestones has a laid back feeling, with beautiful furnishings, and the view is fantastic. The service on the other hand is appalling. It took ages for us to even be greeted, let alone get our drinks. We were enjoying each others company, but come on now, serving a table which you can make some money off of( we were all drinking and eating) is more important to clustering around and gossiping with other servers. We were served by more than three different people throughout the night, which made it a bit confusing. With three people you think there would be some quality control or at least someone to talk to if something wasn’t to your standard. My friend SP ordered a steak for his birthday, and our food was dropped off abruptly and no one came back to follow up. It’s a rookie mistake to not come back and check a steak within the first few bites. My friend ordered it medium, but it came prepared on the rare side. It was chewy, and a pool of blood soon formed. At least 15 minutes went by before we were able to flag down a server, who was about as useful as a knife for a bowl of soup. She exclaimed,” oh yeah, that is pretty rare, let me go talk to the kitchen.” She came back leisurely, and said that since my friend had eaten more than half of the steak they couldn’t get him a new one/ or refund him. What other option did he have? No one else came to the table, she obviously wasn’t doing her job, and all she could offer was a dessert? It was his birthday anyways, so he would have received a dessert anyways. She charged him full price for the steak that wasn’t prepared how he ordered it ( over 20 dollars), and we received a pumpkin creme brulee, which would have insulted anyone who tasted it. It tasted like watery pumpkin butter. It was a bitter way to end an atrocious experience. Our bill for the table came to over 150 dollars. Regretfully, the dish I ordered was, it pains me to say it, actually really delicious. It was a harissa chicken breast that was juicy and flavourful, with a yoghurt dressing over a pilaf and seasonal vegetables. Even though my entree was delicious, what happened to my friend and the service overall was unforgiveable. What ever happened to consistency. Chef’s should be paid more, or at least someone with enough experience should be cooking steaks. Servers on the other hand, especially at Milestones should receive some training, it was a complete joke. At the end of the night, we weren’t served. We were dropped off and charged for it. If you eat here, you’re playing Russian roulette. Might be decent, or a money-suck.
