Argyle Attic

18 02 2013

Argylic Attic is the hipster hangout directly above[and connected] to Smith’s Pub. Argyle lends itself to a conversational evening moreso than Smith’s. The decor is funky and ‘attic’ is a great descriptor of this establishment. It’s quiet and a great place to have a leisurely drink and/or nibbles. To enter Argyle, enter Smith’s head to the bathrooms and turn right up the stairs and right once more.

The service is casual and warm. The drinks are good, although I find the “whiskey bar” concept limiting. The food I tried was good, but I’ll have to try a few more things for a better opinion. Fun space to hang out.

Fernwood Inn

6 06 2012

Fernwood Inn
1302 Gladstone Ave.
250-412-2001

I’ll start with the positive feedback. Fernwood Inn has a great neighbourhood -watering- hole vibe. The server we had was bubbly and friendly.

I had the jerk pork sandwich and salad. I thought the basic flavours were good, but I found the aftertaste to be of resounding allspice. Good jerk should be balanced, with a nice savoury, sweet and spicy combo.

The few times I have been to the Inn, it seems there is an unpleasant odour in the air. Bathrooms? Maybe I’m just sensitive to smells, but it’s the first thing I noticed when I walked in. The price is on the higher side, and the execution on the food could use a bit more finesse. For a pint and some appies, can’t go wrong. Especially when their patio is open for the summer.

Bin 4 Burger Lounge- Wasn’t this a little diner/cafe B4?

9 12 2011

Bin 4 Burger Lounge
911 Yates St.
250-590-4154

Someone call 9-1-1, there’s a new burger place that just opened up on 911 Yates St…ok not funny, but what a great street address eh?

Victoria is quickly becoming a burger city, and why not? The burger is quintessentially North American, and it seems everyone has their own spin on the it, whether that be a classic style burger, gourmet burger, ethical burger, or veggie burger.  Pink Bicycle, Bimo and Belle Patate, Big Wheel Burger, Jackalope Bistro, and Bin 4 Burger Lounge are but a few restaurants in Victoria offering the humble burger in gourmet and classic forms. Burger bars are hella trendy in the states, often showcased on the Food Network, Bobby Flay and Hubert Keller being two of the celebrity chefs known for their burgers.

Bin 4 Burger Lounge lands in the Deluxe/Gourmet burger category, similar to Pink Bicycle. These are competitive times in Victoria for burgers, chains versus local establishments, especially with the new Burger King opening up and FatBurger coming soon. Let’s see how Bin 4 Burger Lounge measured up.

The transformation of the space is impressive. I remember when it was JB’s cafe, and it didn’t look attractive at all. Now it has a feeling of Cactus Club and Ikea, which is a relatively successful aesthetic when it comes to trendy restaurants. All the servers are pretty young girls ( another Cactus Club- ism), but they didn’t have the attitude so they were more approachable.

We started off with a couple of drinks, I had a grapefruit mojito and JB had a gin and tonic. Although the mojito tasted good, I couldn’t taste to booze. Maybe I am becoming accustomed to my strong drinks I make for myself at home, but in a small tumbler glass I should still be able to taste the liquor. JB found the same with his gin and tonic, tasted watery. The next drink, I ordered a beer and JB ordered a double (almost 8 dollars I recall), so that we could finally taste the liquor.

For food, I had the aptly named “Mr. Bean” burger, which part of me chose of my childhood love for Rowan Atkinson. JB had the Wild Mushroom burger with fries and basil aioli dipping sauce. I chose the red onion rings for my side, with barbecue sauce.

Food breakdown:

Mr. Bean: chickpea and black bean patty with curry aioli, lettuce tomato and red onion and goat cheese.

The bun was nice, I think Irene’s bakery provides them to Bin 4. The onion rings were nice and crispy, but not very many of them. The barbecue sauce was O.K., but nothing special. The patty was fine, a bit heavy on the spices though. I’d give it a 6.5 out of 10.

The wild mushroom burger: JB liked the beef patty, but the wild mushrooms were a bit stemmy, and subsequently tough/chewy. But I like that they used wild instead of the usual button or crimini mushrooms.

Our server was friendly and professional, so I can’t fault the service. The space is beautiful too. The prices are a bit high, I don’t know why they do the half price after 9. Personally, I think making them a couple of bucks cheaper overall makes more sense. Otherwise they run the risk of getting a rush of people after 9 to get cheap food, unless they are encouraging more people to come later because it is a “lounge”/ late-night hang-out spot. I’m curious how long that will last.

The food was decent. I’m glad the chef shows some imagination and creativity. Also a lot of their meat is ethically sourced, which is always a great thing.  There is a healthy amount of other options besides burgers, like lettuce cups, bruschetta, tataki, etc. I like that they make all their sauces in house. My only critiques were about the drinks, and just tweaking the seasoning on some of the food. But in general, this place has potential to be a long-standing fun place to hang out. I wish them well.

Swans Brew Pub

8 12 2011

Swans Brewpub
506 Pandora Ave.
250-361-3310

Swans is a Victorian institution, especially among the beer crowd. The beers are simply outstanding. They have live music on most nights, and it’s always a very social and fun atmosphere. The few times I have eaten food there have been a bit of a roller coaster. I personally feel it is overpriced for what you receive.

I had the pizza and a side salad. The dressing for the salad I found to be on the bland side. The pizza was maybe 5.5/10. The dough was not very good, the toppings were fine, but too cheesy and sloppy.

I have the same problem with Swans that I do with Canoe Club. I absolutely love their beer but their food is weak. Step up or fall away, that’s all I’ve got to say.

Spinnaker’s

Spinnaker’s
308 Catherine St.
www.spinnakers.com

Spinnaker’s has a great view, and most of the times I’ve gone have been positive experiences. A couple of colleagues and I went for lunch around a month ago.  We sat up in the top of the restaurant in the sunroom. Our server was timid and relatively efficient, and we put our order in as we were on lunch break. My supervisor raved about their salad with goat cheese so I had to have that, and I also had the spanakopita with roasted tomatoes. The spanakopita had kale instead of spinach and caramelized onions. The tomatoes were served whole, so I just cut them up and turned them into a dip/sauce. My company enjoyed their cured albacore tuna baguettes. They seemed like good portions, and the seafood at Spinnaker’s is Oceanwise, just look for the little symbol. Sustainably caught and harvested fish and shellfish is a rapidly expanding food trend and it’s great to see so many restaurants participating. I had a housemade iced tea, unsweetened, whilst it tasted good, it was hard to justify $4.00 for one glass of tea. The beer at Spinnaker’s is good quality, but that’s up to your palate I suppose.

Cheers

My-Chosen Cafe- Solid choice for lunch in Metchosin

6 09 2011

My-Chosen Cafe
4492 Happy Valley Road
Metchosin, B.C.
250-474-2333
www.mychosencafe.com

I was out running errands with a co-worker and we ended up in the Metchosin area. She recommended that we go to My-Chosen Cafe. I don’t know much about Metchosin, but it seems like a nice place to live, beautiful houses and quite private. As we drove into the parking lot of My-Chosen Cafe it was evident that it served as a community meeting place/centre for the town. There was a lot of buzz, a pizza place, and I even saw some chickens running around.

The feeling is very ‘mom and pop’, which suits the comforting food it serves to a ‘T’. The desserts looked exquisite, I wish I had saved room for some of the pie or cheesecakes. There weren’t many options for vegetarians that seemed appealing, so I asked the server how the veggie burger was, and she said she really enjoys it and she’s not vegetarian. It’s amazing to me that in most restaurants I am limited to either veggie burgers, salads, or soups or pastas. I try to keep it fresh, and honestly I try to order different things to keep my reviews interesting. The burger was good, massive portions, could barely finish it all. It had mushrooms and cheese, and the bread was good. My co-worker ordered the Halibut and chips, which she responded positively to, the portion was also quite large.

For above-standard pub/family food, I would recommend My-Chosen. The prices were fair and I liked that they showcased the homemade baked goods at the front. The server we had was professional, friendly and it was obvious that she enjoyed her job.

Cheers

Smuggler’s Cove- So-so

27 06 2011

Smuggler’s Cove Neighbourhood Pub
2581 Penrhyn St.

I rarely go to Cadboro Bay area, but a few weeks ago the sun was shining and JH and I decided on a beach day. After a nice afternoon of eating pistachios and cherries, we were in need of something more substantial. The location of Smuggler’s Cove is ideal for beach-goers or UVic students seeking an off-campus hangout. The server we had was a touch rough around the edges, but nice enough. She got us some drinks, and we put in our order. I always ask a server to recommend something for me to eat. I find it amusing when I ask for a suggestion and then I see their eyes busily reading the menu as I read it, their mouths simultaneously saying exactly what we’re both reading together. Not much of a suggestion then is it? I went for the cajun veggie burger, which wasn’t particularly cheap, something like 12 or 13 dollars. When I hear Cajun, some level of heat and spices come into mind. The only thing Cajun about the Cajun veggie burger was the name. For a beer and a burger, plus tip, over 20 dollars for the bill, schmeh. I don’t think I’ll plan a special trip to go here again. I’ve eaten here a few times before in the past, and it was about the same, average. I like the building, dark and spacious, and they have a patio for the summer. I do believe the food needs an upgrade into the 21st century, the menu is outdated.

Sticky Wicket- Slack service, decent food

26 06 2011

The Sticky Wicket
919 Douglas St.
250-383-7137

I’ve been to the Wicket a few times for food. The last two times were better than average, but my most recent visit was just average. We didn’t get service for close to ten minutes of sitting down. I can understand when a restaurant/pub is busy, but 10 minutes is a little bit on the lazy/slow side. MH, JH, and I ordered a round of drinks and some small food. I had some yam fries, and some dessert later on.MH had some spring rolls and a margherita pizza. The prices weren’t super high, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the dessert, and the spring rolls tasted like canned tuna apparently. I wasn’t impressed with the vegetarian options, typical fried offerings or unimaginative pizza or salad. Coupled with the service, I don’t think I will be going back anytime soon.

Penny Farthing Pub- Pathetic for Vegetarians

19 06 2011

Penny Farthing Pub
2228 Oak Bay Ave
250-370-9008

I have tried giving the Penny Farthing a few chances. But all three times have been flops. Once I didn’t even get to eat, once the food sucked, and make that twice, the food sucked on my last experience too. The worst part is that, despite their daily specials, the food is exorbitantly overpriced keeping in theme with most of the joke pubs [Bard and Banker, Irish Times for example]. I found it extremely hard to find something veggie-friendly on the menu. Most of it was seafood or meat. For a whopping 12 or more dollars, we had the mediterranean veggie dip. The predominant flavour was cheese, but to my shock, I could taste seafood. I don’t know if there was some type of cross contamination, but it tasted fishy, definitely put me off. The dip was marketed as a veggie dip, yet I couldn’t recognize any vegetables. With a pint of expensive beer, this last experience will be just that, my last. Epic Fail.

Ledge Lounge- Laidback atmosphere and decent food

19 06 2011

Ledge Lounge
1140 Government St.
250-384-6835

The Ledge Lounge lies within the Bedford Regency Hotel, right next to Cafe Artigiano on Government Street. The room itself is quite dark, fitting for a lounge. There is a bar when you first walk in, a pool table, and many inviting tables to sit at. I was surprised when my friends informed me this lounge had a full kitchen, I was compelled to taste their offerings. The Ledge is an LGBT-friendly establishment, but it seemed to be a mixed crowd for a lounge.

Our server was a young man, quite informative and friendly. He suggested I try the veggie burger, which came with a salad and the soup. As a newbie- Vegetarian I asked if the soup had chicken stock, and I was pleased that it was all veggie-based, including no shrimp, oyster or fish sauce in the curry paste. My friends and I enjoyed our drinks, a decent selection of local beers on tap.  The burger was good. I couldn’t make out everything that was in it, but I did find some chickpeas. The portions were generous, and the price was good for the value. I wasn’t super keen about the soup, it was too thick and fatty. There was a lot of flavour, but the consistency was too thick. The salad was good.

Overall, I would suggest going to the Ledge if you want something to nibble on while having a couple of beers/ cocktails. Interesting downtown location, but friendly staff and decent specials( the special that night was lemongrass Saltspring Island Mussels which my friend DL ordered, and enjoyed).

Cheers
